First Grade Curriculum

English Language Arts (ELA)

Monday through Thursday 9 am-11 am and Friday 9 am-10:15 am

Reading:

  • Advance phonics skills by learning more complex vowel patterns, blends, & digraphs.

  • Improve reading comprehension by identifying the main idea, sequence of events, and basic plot elements in stories.

  • Expand vocabulary through reading, daily activities, & explicit instruction.

  • Practice reading fluency by reading aloud with appropriate speed, accuracy, and expression.

Writing:

  • Enhance handwriting skills, focusing on proper letter formation and spacing.

  • Write complete sentences with correct punctuation and capitalization.

  • Begin writing short stories, personal narratives, and descriptive paragraphs.

  • Learn weekly spelling lists based on phonics patterns and high-frequency words.

Grammar:

  • Identify parts of speech such as nouns, verbs, and adjectives.

  • Understand the use of capital letters and punctuation in sentences.

  • Practice correct spelling and grammar through writing exercises.

Math

Monday through Thursday 11 am-1 pm and Friday 10:15 am-11:30 am

Number Sense:

  • Understand place value and learn to count, read, & write numbers up to 100.

  • Solve basic addition and subtraction problems within 20 using various strategies.

Geometry:

  • Identify and describe 2D shapes (circle, square, triangle) and 3D shapes (cube, sphere, cylinder).

  • Learn about symmetry and spatial relationships.

Measurement:

  • Measure length, weight, and volume using standard units.

  • Understand time (hours, half-hours) and money (coin values).

Patterns and Sorting:

  • Recognize, create, and extend patterns using different attributes.

  • Sort objects based on color, shape, size, and other attributes.

Problem Solving:

  • Solve simple word problems involving addition, subtraction, & basic arithmetic.

  • Engage in hands-on activities and lessons to reinforce mathematical thinking.

Judaic Studies

Schedule: Monday through Thursday 1:30 pm-3:30 pm and Friday 12 pm-1:30 pm

Hebrew Language:

  • Continue to learn and recognize Hebrew letters and their sounds.

  • Practice writing Hebrew letters with proper formation and spacing.

  • Break words into syllables and recognize common Hebrew sight words.

  • Improve reading skills with proper pauses and end-of-line recognition

Art and Creative Projects:

  • Utilize art projects to reinforce Hebrew language skills and Judaic concepts.

  • Engage in creative activities designed to make learning interactive & enjoyable

Jewish Calendar
and Holidays:

  • Significant Holidays:

​     - Rosh Hashanah: Deepen understanding of the Jewish New Year & its customs.

​     - Yom Kippur: Explore the significance and traditions of the Day of Atonement.

​     - Sukkot: Learn about the Feast of Tabernacles and its associated holidays.

  • Mid-Year Holidays:

​     - Chanukah: Study the history and customs of the Festival of Lights.

​     - Purim: Celebrate and understand the story of Esther.

​     - Passover: Learn about the Exodus story and Passover traditions.

​     - Shavuot: Understand the significance of the giving of the Torah.

  • Cultural and Historical Context:

​     - Teach the history and customs associated with each holiday.

​     - Use art and creative projects to deepen understanding & make the

      learning process enjoyable.
